Activity images

These photographs come from the days when we visit a festival, take part in a community activity, walk along the coastline, or find ourselves wandering through a small village.

A SUSPENDED CALM – Another photograph from the Urban Highline display in Albufeira.
It struck me that this was both an unusual place to take a rest, and yet incredibly tranquil.
WHEELS IN WAITING – The wheels waited in line for the 40km cycling stage of the European Triathlon Cup in Quarteira. The temporary alignment was just seconds ahead of the chaos that would soon ensue.
IT’S A FINE LINE – This photograph was taken at Albufeira Radical in Portugal. The ‘Urban Highline’ display was breathtaking, and I was able to take this shot from some 25 metres below the line.
LIVE MUSIC  We came across this duo singing and playing on the marina in Faro one Sunday afternoon. Their relaxed vibe fitted the moment perfectly. Chances are they made their living doing something other than gigging, but there was no doubt that music was their passion.
CALLIGRAPHY We spent far too long watching this skilled artisan at work, using precise spacing, rhythm and artistic flair to create beautiful bespoke designs. I wonder whether, when he first learned the craft, he ever imagined using it to entertain people in a park.
FEARS – Can so easily hold us back. I had been uneasy when faced with heights for far too long. Sue and Scott really wanted to do the Sydney Harbour Bridge walk. By the time I got to the top, my imagined fears were gone and we had the best time.

THE PINE FESTIVALFesta da Pinha is a centuries-old celebration in Estoi, a small Algarve village near where we lived for 16 years. The annual 2nd of May procession sees locals in traditional black trousers, white shirts and red neckerchiefs parade through the streets on horseback and in decorated carts.

YOMPING THE ATLANTIC COAST – Sue and I have cycled and walked much of the Portuguese coastline. This photograph, taken near Porto Covo, reminds us just how beautiful those journeys have been, filled with conversation, picnics and the chance to enjoy being in nature.
ART BEFORE THE TIDE – On the beach at Monte Gordo, a sand sculptor works patiently on a rose, knowing that his art is temporary. The photograph captures the quiet concentration behind something that may only exist for a short time.
JUST A CHAT – I have interviewed hundreds of people, and some conversations stay with you. Often the story itself is interesting, but the very best interviews are with those who trust you enough to share something of themselves. Only when express permission has been granted will I share the identity of those from whom I have learned so much.
SMILE – Photography has changed dramatically. Had I not become a professional in sport, I would probably have followed a career in photography. I had even enrolled at college to study the subject before deciding to become a professional golfer. The best advice I can give is simple: the best camera is the one you have with you.
