Images we like

These images do not really fit anywhere else, but we like them and are happy to share them.

In some cases, they have a deeper meaning. In others, it is simply as the label says: images we like.

SAILING BOAT – We were walking along the beach one January morning in Cascais when we saw this sailing boat hugging the coastline on its way out to sea.
I’D RATHER BE FISHING – I spotted this fisherman in Guilin, China, during a visit there in October 2023. He reminded me of a friend, Robbie, who would rather be fishing than doing anything else.
FLYING HIGH – Sue and I were walking in Vilamoura in May 2023. We saw this cegonha-branca (White Stork) leaving and returning to its nest. We cannot be sure who took this photo as we exchanged camera bodies and lenses throughout the walk. We like the photo and so don’t mind who takes the credit.
ALGARVE SHEPHERD – An unexpected encounter with a Shepherd and his flock, led to the taking of this photograph. Thankfully, it is still not uncommon to drive down a small lane and find a flock of sheep and goats being herded by a Shepherd and his dogs.
HORSE WHISPERER – Sue caught the relationship between rider and horse at The Atlantic Tour held at the Vilamoura Equestrian Centre. This was an annual show jumping event that we enjoyed attending.
FRESHLY PLOUGHED FIELD – The simplicity of this view caught my attention. I love the order, the symmetry and the quiet sense of purpose. Sue and I both had grandparents who were farmers. From them, we inherited resilience, independence, the importance of hard work, and the value of community.
BIRD OF PREY – This Falcon was captured with a 300mm focal length lens while in the United Arab Emirates. Bedouin tradition sees birds of prey caught and trained for the hunting season, before being released back into the wild to migrate.
CONCENTRATION – The artist was completely focused on his work, oblivious to Sue who was close by with her camera. We watched him draw several different characters on T-shirts of various styles.
CHILLED OUT We spotted this koala resting in a tree near Sydney during our first trip to Australia in 2010. After an incredibly busy period, we needed a holiday. The koala looked wonderfully chilled out, which was something we both needed to learn how to do.
A FEATHER IN TIME – I took this photograph in North Berwick whilst walking near the Glen Golf Club. This silver feather forms part of East Lothian’s Remembering Together project, a series of public artworks created as places for reflection, remembrance, hope and healing after the Covid-19 pandemic. Resting lightly on the rocks with Bass Rock beyond, the sculpture invites walkers to pause, notice the landscape and find comfort in nature.
PERHAPS WE CAN LEARN – It is not uncommon to find Egyptian geese in the Algarve, but this one seems to spend much of its time around the first and tenth tees at Salgados Golf Club. With its upright stance, elegant posture and confident demeanour, it has become a familiar sight. These are not bad traits for any golfer heading to the tee.
A BUDDING TALENT – I love the idea of public places, such as train and metro stations, parks and other shared spaces, having a piano available for people to play. It gives people an opportunity many may not have at home, especially in highly populated countries where space is at a premium. This photograph was taken by Sue in Singapore.
THE GREAT HORNBILL – Whilst on the Malaysian island of Langkawi, we saw this Great Hornbill sitting on a branch only about forty metres away. We took as many photographs as we could in the few minutes before it flew off gracefully. To capture it calling was something quite special.
